COMMUNITY LINC ⎯
THE RENT PARTY
CLIENT: Community Linc
ROLE: Event branding
DATE: 2022

THE GOAL

Community Linc hosts The Rent Party, an annual fundraiser supporting its mission to end homelessness in Kansas City. I was tasked with creating a visual concept for the event that captured the energy and warmth of the evening while honoring the deeper purpose behind it: building community and raising critical funds for unhoused families.

THE STRATEGY

I started by researching the historical origins of rent parties, social gatherings during the 1920s Harlem Renaissance, where neighbors came together to raise money for rent through music, dancing, and shared joy. These events weren’t just practical; they were vibrant, community-powered celebrations of resilience, a party for the people.

I wanted to bring that same spirit into a modern context. The concept I developed uses bright, energetic colors and dynamic, hand-crafted lettering to reflect the lively mood of the event. The design system is approachable, joyful, and community-forward, intentionally evoking the same sense of togetherness and creative expression that defined the original rent parties.

THE OUTCOME

This concept was selected and used for Community Linc’s official 2024 Rent Party campaign. It appeared on event posters, volunteer shirts, sponsorship materials, and more, helping set the tone for a night of generosity, celebration, and community spirit. It’s a project I’m especially proud of because it combined design, storytelling, and cultural history to create something both beautiful and deeply meaningful.
